Peter Lanyon (1918–1964) was a painter from St Ives whose increasingly abstract work remained rooted in the landscape and working life of west Cornwall. He also made constructions. Gliding gave him new ways to experience the coast, weather and air, which became central to his later paintings.

Peter Lanyon · 1962
Oil on canvas. 121.9 × 182.8 cm.
A painting from Lanyon’s gliding years, when flight changed how he represented landscape. Its reverse dates it to May 1962; Christie’s connects the central diagonal motif with his Porthmeor Mural, then in progress. That link places the canvas within a larger experiment in pictorial space.

An rare early Ben Nicholson relief, an early carved Hepworth torso, Bomberg’s sensational Toledo and an Auerbach charcoal head give Christie’s October sale an exceptionally strong British contingent.
