Tate Britain schedules Gainsborough survey for 2027

Tate Britain has scheduled a Thomas Gainsborough exhibition from 20 May to 10 October 2027. Tate says the show will bring together 120 paintings and drawings to mark the 300th anniversary of the artist’s birth.
Tate describes the project as the first major survey of Gainsborough’s work in more than 20 years. Its stated premise contrasts the polished society portraits that established his reputation with the experimental work of his studio.
The museum says it will evoke the studio as a place where Gainsborough tested techniques, and consider the importance of music and theatre in his work. It also plans to address the significance of his wife and daughters to his life and work.
Tate traces the planned display from the artist’s formative years in Suffolk, through his portrait practice in Bath and London, to the landscapes of his final years, which it describes as lesser known. The outline points to a survey concerned with both eighteenth-century portraiture and the working processes behind it.
Entry will be free for Tate Members; other ticket prices are listed as to be confirmed.
