CODART has announced the publication of volume 139 (2026), number 3 of ‘Oud Holland – Journal for Art of the Low Countries’. The issue contains two research articles and four book reviews.

The opening article, by Tamar van Riessen, examines four satirical paintings by Adriaen van de Venne dated c. 1650-1660. According to CODART, the paintings use marriage lotteries to address moral instruction and social order. Van Riessen’s article is titled ‘Take a chance? Allegory and reality in Adriaen van de Venne’s marriage lotteries (c. 1650-1660)’.

Kirsten Derks considers Rachel Ruysch’s use of a blue ground in a floral still life of 1742. A ground is the preparatory layer beneath a painting’s visible surface. CODART says Derks studies its compositional function and its relationship to drawing techniques late in Ruysch’s career. Her article is titled ‘Out of the blue? An exploration of Rachel Ruysch’s (1664-1750) use of a blue ground’.

The issue concludes with four reviews. Emma C. de Jong and Jan L. de Jong review Ilja M. Veldman’s 2024 publication on Maarten van Heemskerck; Weixuan Li reviews Rudy Jos Beerens’s study of painter communities in seventeenth-century Brussels; Klara Alen considers a 2024 monograph on Ruysch; and Lieske Tibbe reviews a 2023 biography of Willem Witsen based on letters.
