Cornelis Cornelisz. van Haarlem’s monumental \*Hercules and Achelous\*, which achieved $8.105 million at Christie’s New York in 2008, is returning to the auction house as part of 'Heroes & Lovers: Property of a Distinguished Collector'. The collection brings together works ranging from the Renaissance to Picasso, with auctions taking place in New York this November and during Classic Week in February 2027.

Signed and dated 1590, the canvas measures 192 by 244 centimetres. Its subject comes from Ovid’s 'Metamorphoses': Hercules battles the river god Achelous for the hand of Deianeira. Having already fought as a man and a serpent, Achelous transforms into a bull. Van Haarlem catches the decisive struggle before Hercules tears away a horn, which becomes the cornucopia, a symbol of abundance. Smaller episodes in the background unfold around the enormous foreground confrontation.

The painting exemplifies the muscular bodies, elaborate poses and theatrical intensity of Haarlem Mannerism. It dates from the same year as Van Haarlem’s 'The Massacre of the Innocents', now in the Rijksmuseum, and reflects his close artistic exchange with Hendrick Goltzius and Karel van Mander.

Its modern history is equally striking. Confiscated by the East German government in 1985, it subsequently entered Berlin’s museums before being restituted ahead of its 2008 auction. On 15 April that year, it led Christie’s Important Old Master Paintings sale in New York, establishing a world auction record for the artist.

That result provides a substantial benchmark for its next appearance. With no new estimate published on the collection page, attention now turns to how Christie’s will position a painting whose last auction performance placed it among the most expensive Northern Mannerist works ever sold
